2024 AUHF Conference Highlights

For the past 40 years, the African Union for Housing Finance has met annually to deliberate on the issues facing Africa’s affordable housing sector and the role of its members in financing and delivering affordable housing.  This year’s AUHF Conference is a co-production with the International Secondary Mortgage Markets Association (ISMMA). Together, these two industry bodies representing housing finance institutions globally and Africa’s wider affordable housing sector of developers, investors, and other professionals, will present a series of sessions that together dig deep into the question: what does it take to build to last?

There are so many ways to unpack what is understood by “sustainable” in terms of affordable housing.  Sustainability is found in the building materials chosen and used to minimise the impact on the environment.  It is found in access to and use of services – water, sanitation, energy – and residents’ consumption of natural resources over time.  Sustainability is found in the structure of the labour market, and the inclusiveness of an approach that acknowledges the special contributions and needs of women and youth.  Sustainability is challenged by the ultimate cost of the housing built, and the ability of households to sustain monthly repayments.  These are, of course, shaped by the efficiency of capital markets and the ability to leverage sufficient resources to realise true affordability.  Sustainability is therefore about the entire ecosystem, how all of these things work together in an affordable housing market that is itself “built to last”.  All over the world, levels of new development, urban regeneration and building retrofit needed will require massive private and public investment.  This can only be delivered through nurturing our financial ecosystem to explicitly support financial institutions and public authorities in scaling up access to affordable and sustainable housing for citizens.  SCROLL DOWN for more information about the conference.

Event Details: The conference is being offered in-person.  Recordings will be made of all the sessions and posted on the AUHF’s YouTube Channel.

Spanning four decades, the AUHF has itself been built to last – an industry body representing the primary players in Africa’s affordable housing sector, all working in their own niche markets and local geographies to realise a sustainable, affordable housing sector.  CAHF is proud to be the Secretariat of the AUHF and delighted to work on a daily basis with its members.

AUHF members in Tanzania include the Tanzania Mortgage Refinance Company Ltd, First Housing Finance (1st Housing Finance), NMB Bank Plc Tanzania, Watamushi Housing Investments, CPS Zanzibar, CRDB Bank Plc,
