Affordable housing finance: new market development in Africa
The presentation describes the efforts of some market practitioners to engage in niche markets in Africa, delivering affordable housing finance and products. The emphasis is on examples of housing microfinance practice, and the work of Habitat for Humanity International and Select Africa in Malawi; Rooftops Canada and NACHU in Kenya; and Development Workshop, CLIFF, and KixiCredito in Angola. A brief overview of South Africa’s efforts to extend mortgage lending downmarket, and efforts to invest in rental housing is also given. This presentation was given last week (30 May 2012) at the World Bank’s Conference on Housing Finance in Emerging Economies.
