Africa International Housing Show 2023 - Beyond Rhetorics to Homes: Making Housing Happen

The 17th edition of the Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) took place in Abuja, Nigeria from the 24th – 27th of July 2023. Under the theme of “Beyond Rhetoric to Homes: Making Housing Happen”, this year’s edition focused on the need to manifest practical and innovative solutions.

A key issue tackled by this year’s conference is the need for data to support policymaking and investment decisions in Nigeria’s housing sector. To this end, a committee was set up to collaborate and drive the collation and dissemination of housing data. AUHF members Debra ErbOlajumoke Akinwunmi, Kenya Mortgage Refinance Company, TAF Africa GlobalShelter Afrique, Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, Nigeria Mortgage Refinance Company, Family Homes Funds, IFC, and Reall among other stakeholders actively contributed their efforts in panel discussions and presentations throughout the conference.

Conference sessions covered topics ranging from the effects of climate change on housing, green investments, and user finance to alternative and appropriate building technologies. On the final day of the event, delegates pledged to collaborate in the realisation of the Abuja Declaration, emphasizing their commitment to advancing housing initiatives in the region. Overall, the 17th Africa International Housing Show was a significant milestone in promoting the advancement of the housing sector in Nigeria and across the African continent, offering valuable insights and solutions to address current challenges and future opportunities.
