Understanding Housing Finance in Informal Settlements in Zambia: Socio-Economic Household Survey

The research study summarises the findings of a household survey conducted in three informal settlements in the greater Lusaka area.  The report considers the possibilities of developing non-mortgage housing finance in lower income households in Zambia. The research suggests that there is strong potential for housing finance linked to entrepreneurship. Building and home improvement for the purpose of rental is common. An approach towards housing finance that supports sustaining and improving household livelihoods and not just the provision of shelter is thus feasible.
