Unlocking the delivery of housing in Kenya: the need for construction finance
Kenya’s Affordable Housing Program (AHP) was launched by the Government of Kenya in December 2017, with an ambitious target of providing 500,000 housing units to be delivered over a 5 year period. This presentation, given at the recent Affordable Housing Investment Summit conference in Nairobi, Kenya, provides an overview of the AHP and looks critically at the viability for local developers to participate in the delivery of affordable housing on privately owned land, an expected delivery channel of the AHP. The presentation highlights the gaps for local developers to participate, and provides practical suggestions on how the AHP framework can be expanded to unlock delivery by this subset of developers. While the presentation is targeted at unlocking delivery by local developers on privately owned land, the recommendations will assist in stimulating the AHP more broadly.
